UAA Music faculty Dawn Lindsay (violin), Miriam English Ward (viola), John Lutterman (cello) and Timothy Smith (piano) will be joining together to present an exciting afternoon of chamber music. The program will include the powerful and emotionally charged Trio in E minor by Dmitri Shostakovich, and two Romantic powerhouse works: Frank Bridge’s Pensiero and Allegro appassionato for viola and piano, as well as the lyrically expressive Piano Quartet in E-flat Major by Robert Schumann.

The Shostakovich, which has been described as “one of (his) most haunting and emotionally searing works,” was written at the height of the second world war, which also coincided with the death of one of Shostakovich’s closest friends.

Frank Bridge, perhaps a lesser known composer from the late Romantic era, wrote very evocatively lyrical works that combine the emotionalism of Brahms with the drama of late Russian school composers such as Tchaikovsky.

The Schumann Piano Quartet was composed in 1842, a period considered by some as the height of the Romantic era. The work is permeated with expressive melodies that mirror the lyricism in his popular song cycles. This year is also known as Schumann’s “year of chamber music,” a point in his life which saw the composition of some of his best known chamber music repertoire.
