Dave Brubeck: A Centennial Celebration

Dave Brubeck: A Centennial Celebration
Dave Brubeck: A Centennial Celebration

Presented by Anchorage Festival of Music
April 26th
Brubeck’s The Gates of Justice

The Anchorage Festival of Music partners with the Alaska Chamber Singers, the Melissa “Jazzmom” Fischer Trio, the East Anchorage High School Jazz Choir, and local instrumentalists to perform Dave Brubeck’s The Gates of Justice cantata and timeless Brubeck classics. Mixing jazz, rock, folk, and classical styles and juxtaposing biblical and Hebrew liturgical texts with the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Brubeck’s The Gates of Justice explores how fundamental concerns of civil rights and social justice can unite rather than divide humanity. The Gates of Justice features acclaimed New York-based soloists Cantor/tenor David Aaron Katz and baritone Eric McKeever.

As we celebrate Dave Brubeck’s 100th birthday, we also commemorate the 50th anniversary his first performance with the Anchorage Festival of Music. The second half of the concert will be a tribute to Brubeck and his family’s 1970 visit to Anchorage. A cross-generational gathering of jazz artists will draw from the original 1970 program, including Brubeck’s immortal “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo à la Turk”.
